Okay, yeah, that was a bit much, but still!
We realize that while planning a gender reveal party, there are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself. In order to make this article as effective and helpful as possible, we’re outlining these questions in detail. So, put your feet up, grab a mug of herbal tea, and a pint of ice cream, because here we go!
When should I plan my gender reveal party?

The first trimester is nerve-racking for most women; they eagerly wait for the 12-week mark through nausea and exhaustion before they can breathe a sigh of relief. While it’s totally okay and normal to plan ahead for your little one, we suggest spending the first few months of pregnancy focusing on your health and the health of your little nugget. The other thing to keep in mind when it comes to the timing of your gender reveal party is where you’re going to hold it. We recommend using a party center or event venue for your gender reveal party. The last thing you want to worry about during your pregnancy is how to cram all of your loved ones into your home (where will they park? Do you have enough bathrooms? Where will they sit, munch, or mingle?). Because venues can fill up quickly with weddings on the weekend, plan your party on a weekday evening. Not only will you be able to reserve the venue more easily, but you’ll save a lot of money. NOAH’S Event Venue, for example, will rent out the smaller reception rooms for gender reveal parties at a steep discount on weekdays. Seriously, using a venue to ease the stress of this party is worth it when you’re expecting, and splitting the cost between a few family members is another great way to utilize a venue vs your own backyard.
So, let’s talk logistics. While some ultrasound technicians claim to have the technology to assess the gender of your baby as early as 14-weeks, most obstetricians say they cannot guarantee an accurate reading until 18-weeks. Even then, your baby might be in a rolly-polly mood and won’t cooperate during an ultrasound (mine didn’t!). For this reason, we suggest not hosting a gender reveal party until after your 20-week anatomy scan. So, call NOAH’S at around 13-weeks and come in for a tour. We’ll show you exactly where you can host your party in our stylish and beautiful venue, and you can reserve a post-20-week date when you’re ready.
Should I combine the gender reveal party with a baby shower?
Throwing a gender reveal party and baby shower at the same time carries more considerations than you’d think. Do you want gender-specific gifts? If so, it might be better to have two parties, giving guests enough time to purchase girl or boy clothes, blankets, or gifts. Do you want out-of-town guests to participate in both parties? It might be better to have one party in order to reduce travel time and expenses for them.
Overall, combining the two parties leads to one overarching question: What do you want out of these parties? If you’d like the purpose of your baby shower to be gathering family and friends together to celebrate the pending arrival of your sweet little one, then combining these two parties makes sense. If you’d like the purpose of your gender reveal party to be strictly the gender reveal, then maybe having two isn’t a bad idea. Typically gender reveals are co-ed with a lot of family members and friends, and though baby showers can also be co-ed, some mothers-to-be prefer a ladies-only affair. Setting your priorities for these parties is what will ultimately lead you to answer this question. Keep in mind, that having two parties is completely up to you, and it isn’t selfish nor demanding (as long as only one party has gifts as an expectation).
Do I have to be surprised?
The purpose of a gender reveal party is simply to reveal the gender of your baby. While it’s fun to be surprised, it’s also fun to surprise others. Either way, you can have a party. Make sure to tell your ultrasound technician well in advance if you’re planning a gender reveal party and want to be surprised. They’ll happily write down the gender and give you an envelope with the information inside. If you’d like to know the gender ahead of time, that’s also just fine! Someone will have to know the gender in order to plan the surprise, so keep in mind whether you’d like that to be you, a friend, or a close loved one.
How do I decorate for a gender reveal party?
This is where things get fun and festive, and your personality can really shine! A pink and blue-themed party is on point: pink and blue linens, pink lemonade and blue punch, blue and pink centerpieces. With a versatile venue that doesn’t limit your creative decorating mind, you can bring in a balloon arch, streamers, or colorful flowers! Whatever works for you!
It’s also fun to include some kind of voting system or poll in your gender reveal decor. You can invite each guest to wear a pin that says “boy” or “girl” depending on their guess or add their name to a jar labeled as such.
What food do I serve?
Depending on the time of day, people will probably expect light munchies or a full-on meal. Either way, use a venue with an open-vendor policy like NOAH’S Event Venue. We allow folks to choose their favorite caterer, bakery, or food truck to supply yummy munch-ables. How do I REVEAL the gender???

The gender reveal is the absolute highlight of the event, so make sure to save the reveal until your guests are settled in and ready to celebrate. Before the party, give someone the envelope that contains the secret inside and tell them how you’re planning on revealing the surprise. Just a note, it’s good etiquette to pay for the materials needed to craft the surprise unless someone else offers.
While there’s an endless number of ways to actually do the reveal, we’ve gathered a few of our favorites. Handing the note to a baker to hide a blue or pink colored cake in layers of buttercream or fondant is very popular. Dark gender reveal balloons like this one are also a fun way to surprise the crowd; pink or blue confetti rests inside ready to rain down on your guests with a “pop!” Unlabeled cans of pink or blue silly string are fun after guests spray the couple, revealing the surprise! I once attended a gender reveal party where the couple invited each guest to pick a balloon (either pink or blue depending on what gender the guest thought the baby might be), when it was time to reveal, each guest attempted to blow up their balloon. An unseeable tiny hole was in each pink balloon, so only the blue ones inflated! So fun!
Should I expect gifts?
Typically baby showers and not gender reveal parties are the time to receive gifts from family members and friends. If your gender reveal party is combined with the shower, it’s totally fine to include your registry information on the invitation. If you’re having a separate baby shower, it’s pretty uncool to expect gifts during both.
A gender reveal party is fun, exhilarating, and, in some ways, totally life-changing for the parents-to-be. Something about learning the gender of your baby takes away the abstraction that comes with expecting and makes the connection to your baby stronger.
Gender reveal parties at NOAH’S are one of our favorite parties to see! We love how people dress up our already elegant rooms for the big surprise!
